Gobbling Snowstorm

Even though it was a short work week, it felt like the week dragged on for longer than a week. After last week's craziness, I started the week looking forward to some relaxation, some turkey, some snowboarding, and more sleep. Instead, I was sick Tuesday and Wednesday (aftermath of taking pictures at my cousin's wedding at 7:30 am outside in the cold). I was completely out of commission. Bleh. Turkey day came around and I didn't grub as much as I usually do (maybe not having that big of an appetite was a good thing for the extra holiday poundage). Dayquil again was my savior in fixing me up.

The next day I was up and alive and ready to hit Tahoe to test out my new (used) board. Aside from having to wait a long time to pick up the rental SUV, we set off for our adventure up to Tahoe with Van, Simon, and Kev. Usually I'm always a passenger, but this time I drove the whole way up, bouncing around with Beeker in the passenger seat as he entertained me. It was a long ride up with traffic due to roads closing from some sort of accident but we finally made it up in about 5 hours. At one point on the 50, traffic was completely stopped. People got out of their cars, turned up the music and started having a party on the street. Luckily, that was only for half an hour, which went by pretty fast since we were listening to Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. (There wasn't even any snow on the roads yet!)

Again, this sounds like an eternity but it's only Friday. We manage to get up there just in time to meet the gang for some buffet dinner at Harrah's. While we waited in traffic, they waited in the buffet line so either way, we were all pretty screwed. To walk off the food, we hit up the casinos to gamble a bit. Some stayed at Harrahs, but some of us headed to Harveys. All in all, a good night. Nothing too crazy and I went home that night with extra money, even after factoring in the cost of the buffet dinner.

Now for the fun part of this entry. The next 24 hours. We walked back to the cabin (2 blocks from the casinos) and rested up for a full day of boarding. From the minute we stepped out of the cabin, it was snowing up until we made it back to the cabin around 3pm. (Yes, I was a wuss and went back early so that I didn't have to battle for the showers..muhaha) Just my luck that the sun finally came out after we took off but oh well. I squeezed in a hot shower and nice nap before the troops made their way back.

Snow, here we come!

Damn you, snow!

Now, the whole point of this boarding trip was to just board for the day and get back Saturday night so that people could still get things done before the weekend ended. After everyone packed and was ready to head back, we left everyone in Tahoe to do just that. 6:30pm. We stopped to fill up and even dragged on to see if we could find cheaper gas. 9:30pm. You'd think we'd almost be home. We wished! Only 20 miles out on the 50 and going anywhere from 3-5 mph, 10 if we were lucky. It turns out that peopled needed to stop on the side of the road to put chains on from the amount of snow that dumped that day. To make things worse, when you got to the top of the mountain, people were pulling over once again to yank these chains off. So much for dinner anytime soon.

10:30pm. I'm carsick and we make it to Sacramento to meet up with Beeker's sister and fiancee for a super late night dinner at Elephant Bar. They were good sports about waiting up for us and telling us stories about their pre-wedding arrangements/obstacles.

2am. We're home and everyone's wiped out.

7pm. I'm still wiped out and damn, it's brrr... luckily, I'm not sick anymore.

It was only a few months ago that Beeker taught me the basics of rollerblading and since then I only went a couple more times to learn how to turn until last night. A couple of days ago, Beeker asked if I would play hockey with the Autobots because they needed another girl to sub. If you know me, you know I've never played hockey ever. I've watched a few of their games and even watched one hockey game on tv. Outside of that, I'm a hockey newbie.

Being the type of person to try something at least one without knocking it, I was game. I got the needed padding the day of the game and all I could picture were the lil kids on the Charmin commercials all padded up, ready to play. As the afternoon came closer and I finished work, I started to get a bit ansy, almost fearful that I just agreed to an early death.

The original plan was to arrive an hour early so that I could skate around and pass the hockey puck around since I'd never really used a hockey stick before. With traffic and Beeker's group meeting, it left us just enough time to get there for the game. I suited up and kept shaking while Beeker helped me with all the padding. Did I mention I couldn't stop shaking?

All in all, I did okay. I ate it a couple of times and even hit the puck a few times. I even missed a shot all together and ate it attempting. It was the Autobots' first loss but to me, it was a win. We all had fun and I made new friends. Everyone was so encouraging and at one point, I forgot how scared I was to begin with. I'm glad Beeker got me to try something new. Thanks Beeker! *mwah*

Snapply Tidbit

For some odd reason, mosquitoes have grown to like my blood. Without fail, especially in Asia, I'm usually covered in mosquito bites. After finishing my Snapple at lunch today, I learned something that may help me in the future in regards to damn mosquitoes.
"Real Fact #10"
Mosquitoes are attracted to people who have recently eaten bananas.
Mental note taken.
